Natural Progesterone and Estrogen as an Alternative to HRT

by Jeannine Virtue

A Dec. 30, 2003 Associated Press article stated that about one quarter of women who stopped taking hormone replacement therapy because of its risks wind up resuming HRT because of menopause misery.

This article verifies what we have been saying all along; "No treatment is NOT an option." Women need an alternative treatment to hormone replacement therapy. Otherwise, their lives can be quite miserable.

Almost daily we receive an email, phone call or forum post from a cranky, depressed, sleep-deprived and/or over-heated woman in a desperate search for something - anything - that will put the brakes on menopause symptoms without the use of synthetic hormone replacement therapy.

We not only advocate staying away from synthetic hormone replacement therapy, we advocate finding healthy, effective alternative treatment options to hormone replacement therapy. We advocate bringing your hormones in balance by using estrogen-building nutritional support and progesterone cream treatment as an alternative for hormone replacement therapy. In this newsletter we provide a step-by-step guide to getting off hormone replacement therapy without making your life miserable. This plan as outlined is near foolproof. Of course, you should discuss medication alternatives with your regular health care provider.

In the first month you will begin to slowly wean yourself off synthetic hormones while introducing the hormone replacement therapy replacements. The purpose behind slowly tapering off hormone replacement therapy is two-fold. First, you can avoid drug withdraw by taking the slow approach. Second, slowly weaning yourself off hormone replacement therapy provides the necessary time for the alternatives to take hold. It typically takes a month or two for the natural alternative elements to solidly work through your body.

Below the following schedule is a description of each product listed:

Month 1:

  • Decrease your dose of hormone replacement therapy by half. You can do this by requesting a new prescription from your physician or by physically cutting the pills in half.

  • Begin using an organic, natural, USP progesterone cream like Return to Eden progesterone cream.

  • Begin using a nutritional menopause support product like Preserve.

Month 2:

  • Decrease your dose of hormone replacement therapy by half again. Again, you can either request a new prescription or cut the pills in half yourself.

  • Continue your new regime of menopause nutritional support products and progesterone cream.

Month 3:

  • Decrease your dose of hormone replacement therapy by half again or stop altogether.

  • Continue taking menopause nutritional suport products and natural progesterone cream.

Month 4:

  • If you still experience menopause symptoms, begin taking the Return to Eden estrogen cream. Although most women find that their menopause symptoms are adequately adressed with progesterone cream and nutritional support, this option usually knocks out any remaining menopause symptoms in women who do need supplemental estrogen. Using a natural estrogen cream like Return to Eden's Triest cream is safe and effective because the estrogen is bioidentical to what a woman's body naturally makes. You will use the estrogen alongside the progesterone for balance and to avoid estrogen dominance.

For an in-depth view of the benefits of natural progesterone, read "What Your Doctor May Not Tell You About Menopause: The Breakthrough Book on Natural Progesterone" by the late John R. Lee, M.D., an international authority and pioneer in the use of natural progesterone cream and natural hormone balance.

Diet and exercise also play an incredible crucial role in how well your body fares through the changes of menopause.

Low Estrogen Symptoms Affect Numerous Parts Of a Woman's Body

by Patsy Hamilton

Doctors and researchers are not sure that low estrogen symptoms and menopausal symptoms are identical. The numerous symptoms that can be associated with menopause may be caused by other things. The primary symptoms of low estrogen levels are irregular or missed periods, as occurs in the years leading up to and during menopause. Women whose ovaries have been damaged or surgically removed experience menopause like symptoms, no matter what their age. Estrogen replacement therapy relieves their symptoms, which leads to the cause and effect theory that menopausal symptoms are symptoms of low estrogen levels. Over the years doctors and researchers have theorized that menopause is a kind of estrogen deficiency syndrome. No one knows for sure. Estrogens primary role during a womans reproductive years is to prepare the uterus to receive a fertilized egg, but researchers have shown that estrogen does much more than this.

The Skin

According to the North American Menopause Society, hormones play an important role in skin health. Menopausal symptoms that are almost certainly low estrogen symptoms include a decline in collagen and thickness of the skin. This occurs mostly during the years immediately following menopause. Some women notice that their skin is dryer; others develop acne, particularly if they had acne during adolescence. Estrogen replacement therapy may have beneficial effects on the skin, but is not recommended solely for this purpose, because of the numerous health risks with which it is associated.

Researchers at the University of Melina in Italy, investigating alternatives to estrogen replacement therapy believe that isoflavones from red clover may be effective. Isoflavones are a type of plant estrogen and there is evidence supporting their use to treat other menopausal symptoms, so these scientists decided to investigate their effects on the skin. They concluded that supplements containing red clover isoflavones increased skin elasticity, collagen content and thickness, reducing the signs of skin aging, believed to be symptoms of low estrogen levels.

Bones

One of the best known of the low estrogen symptoms is bone loss or osteoporosis. Until studies linked estrogen replacement therapy to serious health risks such as blood clots and strokes, it was often recommended to reduce the risk of osteoporosis in post-menopausal women. Lack of estrogen inhibits the bodys ability to absorb calcium and vitamin D. Vitamin D is necessary for the body to effectively absorb calcium. Sun-screen which is necessary to protect the skin may also inhibit the bodys ability to activate vitamin D found in food. For this reason the North American Menopause Society advises that a vitamin D supplement may be necessary. The latest USRDA suggests that vitamin D supplements are probably necessary for anyone over the age of 50.

The body is able to absorb calcium most efficiently when iron, manganese, phosphorous, magnesium and vitamin C are present as well. Thus, a daily multi-vitamin containing adequate amounts of all of these nutrients, as well as vitamin D, provides the best insurance that a womans bones will continue to receive necessary amounts of calcium. Specialized health supplements designed for women containing plant estrogens, as well, may be even more effective, as the increase in dietary estrogenic compounds may counteract the symptoms of low estrogen levels that occur when the ovaries stop functioning.

Sexuality

There is no evidence that estrogen replacement therapy alone can increase a womans sex drive or libido. Combination type hormone replacement therapies that include testosterone and other sex hormones appear to be more effective for this purpose. Vaginal dryness and thinness are similar low estrogen symptoms that affect the skin. Since vaginal dryness and thinness can cause painful intercourse, women may experience a decreased sex drive as a result. This can create a kind of vicious circle, because lack of sexual stimulation may cause a decrease in vaginal health, once again decreasing desire.

Many women have found that they enjoy an increased sex drive following menopause. They feel an increased sense of freedom, because there is no longer a risk of pregnancy. For women who have the desire, but are bothered by dryness, any of the K-Y lubricants can help and there are some that are specifically designed to act on vaginal tissue to relieve dryness. Herbal sexual stimulants including ginseng and tribulus terrestris can increase libido. Tribulus may also increase levels of circulating hormones, thus counteracting other symptoms of low estrogen levels, as well.

The Brain

No one is sure if mood swings, depression, anxiety, memory problems, trouble concentrating and other symptoms noted during menopause are low estrogen symptoms or if they are caused by something else. At least one study has shown that estrogen improves the ability of the receptors in the hypothalamus to receive and transmit signals. The hypothalamus is a part of the brain in which memories are stored, is important in regulating mood, sleep and sexuality, among other functions. Autopsies have shown that the hypothalamus is smaller in people suffering from major depressive disorders, possibly inhibiting its ability to function properly.

Women who have experienced anxiety or depression prior to menopause seem to be more likely to suffer from depression during or following menopause. It is important to seek treatment for depression, particularly if suicidal thoughts are present. Studies have shown that low-dose estrogen therapy is fairly effective, as are the newer antidepressants, known as Selective Serotonin Re-uptake Inhibitors.

If depression is mild or emotions seem to swing from one extreme to another, a natural antidepressant like 5-HTP or St. Johns Wort may be effective. 5-HTP may be harder to find, but is not believed to have negative effects on the liver, as does St. Johns Wort. Gingko biloba may help problems with memory. Black cohosh has been shown in clinical studies to relieve not only hot flashes, but some of the emotional symptoms associated with menopause. If these problems are symptoms of low estrogen levels, then dietary supplementation with plant estrogens should help.

Supplements

A womans nutritional needs changes over the years. For information about the most complete nutritional supplements for women over the age of 30, please visit the Menopause and PMS Guide. Many women have found that it is possible to avoid low estrogen symptoms and avoid estrogen replacement therapy.

Dealing With and Treating Menopause

by Nathalie Fiset

Menopause can be a difficult phase to go through for any woman. Aside from the thought of dealing with physical and emotional changes, menopause has been a cause of unnecessary confusion and worry to those who are nearing this specific phase because they dont know how to deal with other symptoms.

Characterized by the end of menstruation period, menopause affects every woman differently just like in various biological changes. Common menopausal symptoms include changes in period patterns, hot flushes, night sweats usually followed by a chill, altered sleeping patterns or troubled sleeps, vaginal atrophy or vaginal dryness, thinning, or itching, depression, mood swings and emotional fluctuations, confusion or inability to focus on things and carrying out tasks, and hair loss or growth on unlikely areas such as the face.

Menopause may also cause more serious health problems such as obesity, osteoporosis, and heart attack in the long run if not paid attention. Make sure that you know and are well aware of other menopausal symptoms so you can understand it fully.

PROPOSED TREATMENT AND ALTERNATIVES

If you are one of those who are nearing menopausal years, educating yourself on how you can mange the symptoms and the effects of menopause can help you start living your life in harmony.

Experts suggest that eating a healthy diet along with regular exercise during menopausal years is effective to cope up and treat these symptoms. But if you think you can no longer handle the symptoms of menopause, then it is now time to seek for professional help or treatment to help you out.

Studies show that the need of women to seek for professional help varies on her need and emotional stability. Experts say that although many menopausal women do not really need special treatments for menopause, there are those who need it to overcome their difficulties.

For those women who are thinking of getting a treatment, there are various menopausal treatments available today. Since there is no single treatment that sits down well to all women, it is best if you consult your physician first before getting any of these treatments.

By doing this, you can ask your doctor to discuss with you the treatments that can be perfect for you. The following are the most popular menopause available today.

1. Hormone therapy (HT) or Hormone Therapy Replacement (HRT) is one of the most popular menopausal treatments today. Undergoing through this treatment will reduce and relieve menopausal symptoms like vaginal dryness, hot flushes and night sweats. Recent studies have warranted special caution in using HRT as they may be associated with an increase in heart problems.

Experts agree that HT/HRT should be taken at the beginning of menopause because it can be an effective solution to bone loss or osteoporosis because it can increase bone density by around five percent in two years and can even reduces the risk of spinal fractures by 40 percent.

A follow up after the menopausal years is as equally important to ensure the maximum effect of the therapy.

Experts say that HT is not recommended for the prevention of heart or bone disease, stroke, and memory loss. And since there many kinds of HTs, the best way to know which one is the best for you is by consulting so he/she can suggest whats most suitable type for you.

2. Bisphosphonates, on the other hand helps the renewal of bone cells that are constantly being broken down. This treatment prevents bone loss by hindering the breakdown process. Although this is effective in preventing osteoporosis, experts warns the interested patients to brace for side effects like gastrointestinal upsets.

Today, the most commonly used bisphosphonates include Fosamax, Actonel and Didrocal that should be taken daily or weekly.

3. Selective Estrogen Receptor Modulators (SERMs) is also one of the popular treatments because it supplies the natural estrogen of the body. Patients must look out for the potential side effects of SERMs that may include hot flushes and vein coagulation.

Other effective menopause treatment include Tibolone (Livial) therapy, parathyroid therapy, Vitamin D and calcium supplements and Bioidentical hormone therapy.
Overall, nothing replaces good healthy living habits like exercising regularly, eating well and relaxing,

Treatments For Breast Cancer

by Michael Russell

In the past, the treatment options for a particular disease were limited to only a few. With the advancements in medical science, we have scores of treatment options available for any disease.

The various treatment options available for breast cancer have increased in number too. Today there are many ways to combat and deal with breast cancer. They can be broadly classified into the following categories:

1. Surgery: Surgery has been the traditional mode of treatment for breast cancer. However, changes have taken place during recent times. The surgery now is more precise and is directed to the exact spot of the disease so that the damage to the unaffected area is minimized.

a. Lumpectomy: The cancerous lump is removed surgically without removing the surrounding lymph nodes.

b. Mastectomy: This is performed if the lump has become large or in case the cancer has spread to other areas. The affected breast is surgically removed.

c. Lymph Node Dissection: This is the surgical removal of lymph nodes. Usually done in case of invasive breast cancer, it is a procedure performed at the time of mastectomy or lumpectomy. During mastectomy, it is an extension of the breast incision (to the armpit area). If done during lumpectomy, a separate incision is performed in the armpit. A part or all of the lymph nodes are removed. Usually it also involves cutting the nerve carrying sensation to the area.

2. Radiation Therapy: Radiation is a highly targeted and effective way of treatment, which destroys the cancer cells. High levels of radiation are sent directly to the cancer cells. Radiation therapy undertaken after surgery can also kill those cancer cells that could not be treated by surgery. It can also be combined with chemotherapy, to relieve pain, or to shrink the tumor. It is short and relatively easy but side affects can also occur. The traditional radiation therapy is external in nature. Internal radiation therapy is also being experimented. In this process, radiation-producing substances are either implanted directly in to the tumor or injected through a tube.

3. Herceptin: Applicable only to women with HER2-positive breast cancer, it consists of an antibody, the primary role of which is blocking the HER2 protein in cancer cells. It is useful in cases where the breast cancer has spread to other parts of the body. Also known as immune treatment, it is approved by US FDA for women with metastatic disease.

4. Hormone Therapy: It is another effective treatment. It is useful for women having hormone receptive positive breast cancer. Aromatase inhibitors are more effective in women with post menopause and Tamoxifen in women with pre menopause hormone receptive positive breast cancer.

5. Chemotherapy: Chemotherapy, or use of chemicals to treat a disease, is a systematic therapy. Since the use of chemicals affects the whole body by going through the blood stream, it is very effective as it can act on the cells, which are rapidly dividing. A major drawback in this mode of treatment is that the drugs act not only on the cancer cells, they act on healthy cells as well leading to various side-effects like losing hair, nausea, skin diseases and so on.

6. Alternative Therapies: In addition to the above modes of treatment, there are many alternative therapies as well e.g. yoga, acupuncture etc. Since sufficient research is not available in respect of such therapies, it is difficult to come to any decisive conclusion.

Since the disease conditions differ from patient to patient, the ideal treatment for an individual would depend on various factors. The best mode of treatment can be formulated with due consultation between the patient and the doctor.

Menopause and Vaginal Dryness

by Cathy Taylor

Many women feel vaginal dryness during menopause due to the thinning of the mucus membranes and the loss of elasticity in the walls of the vagina. The reduction in the production of estrogen in the ovaries may cause the thinning of the vaginal lining. This, in itself, does not cause any problems, unless the lining of the vagina becomes inflamed and dry; then it is painful.

Vaginal dryness is medically known as 'atrophic vaginitis,' and it sounds like a disease, though it is not. It can be overcome with simple remedies, such as, a good nutritional program during your menopause. This is an excellent way of preventing your vagina from becoming dry and thin. Other solutions to the problem are the estrogen replacement creams, tri-estrogen cream or triple estrogen cream, and pills that your doctor can prescribe. Certain Over-The-Counter (OTC) vaginal lubricants could be helpful too. Applying Vitamin E oil helps hydrating the vaginal membranes.

If you are on medications, such as antihistamines, decongestants or other drugs with drying potential, these can cause drying of the mucous membranes, aggravating the problem. Doctors suggest a perineal wash (area between the posterior vulva junction and the anus in females) once a day. Women need to rinse the vulvar region (the external genital organs of the female, including the labia majora, labia minora, clitoris, and entrance of the vagina) with plain water. Opening the labia gently with one hand, water is either sprayed from a squirt bottle or poured gently from a square container.

Menopause, Vaginal Dryness and Sex

Though menopause is nature's contraceptive, women need to wait at least a year before giving up on contraceptives.

During Perimenopause, the period leading to menopause, the sexual desire gets diminishes often. The thinning of the genital membranes and vaginal dryness often lead to discomfort during masturbation and sexual intercourse.

Women who have infrequent intercourse could gently stretch the vaginal tissues by inserting a couple of fingers in the vagina during bath. This may prevent vaginismus, a muscular contraction causing the vagina to close, and pain on penetration. Maintaining regular sexual activity, and/or masturbation will help. To aid vaginal lubrication, which is delayed with age, women can ask their partners to prolong foreplay. This could make penetration easy and comfortable.

Treating Thinning of Membranes and Vaginal Dryness

Start with drinking 2 liters of water and herbal tea every day.

Consumption of soybean stimulates estrogen production, leading to elimination of vaginal dryness in many women.

Adding canola, olive, sunflower, or soybean oil to your diet will add lubrication to your body.

Doctors suggest applying intra-vaginally, natural progesterone cream once a day.

In doses of 200 IU at a time, take 600 to 800 IU of Vitamin E daily. Vitamin E is contra-indicated for hypertension, diabetes or a rheumatic heart. You will need to consult your doctor.

One effective way of easing vaginal dryness is to insert a Vitamin E capsule intra-vaginally.

Menopause Symptoms How Do They Appear?

by Jeanette Pollock

Basically, menopause symptoms start to appear when there is an intermittent and erratic changing of your hormone production. The transition of menopause starts at this stage where your ovary fails to secrete enough hormones causing your estrogen to likewise fail gradually. Menopause symptoms, their kinds and levels, may vary on each woman. Some may interact with the symptoms a little difficult than other women, while others may feel less intensity with the problem.

What are these menopause symptoms and how to cope with them?

Psychological menopause symptoms when a woman undergoes menopause transition, different kinds and levels of depression is more likely to envelop her. However, some studies showed that these depressions are not only the cause of the menopausal transition itself but also other factors such as household circumstances and the lack of sleep. The following are the most typical psychological dilemmas that women go through:

 Difficulty in concentrating

 Irritability

 Forgetfulness

 Mood swings

 Overreaction to minor details

 Anxieties; and others

You can alleviate the severity of these emotional difficulties if you will exercise regularly. Through physical exercises, you can preserve your bone strength and maintain your hormonal balance. Also, talking with other women who are undergoing such process may be a big help to deal with the problem a lot easier.

Vasomotor menopause symptoms the most common is hot flashes, wherein you may experience them even few years before you stop menstruating. They are the result of the changing temperature control of your body. They would continue for a little more years, after your menopause. Hot flashes usually occur at nighttimes, where you may feel sudden waves of heat all over your body, more particularly on your face and chest.

Other problems that accompany hot flashes:

 Palpitations

 Perspiration

 Chilling or sweating

 Headaches

There are alternative treatments that you can take to control hot flashes. Some of these are:

- Herbal treatment

- Taking vitamins and natural supplements

- And some medical treatments prescribed by the doctor

By following these simple tips, you can minimize the discomforting effects of hot flashes:

- Avoid too much stress

- Minimize caffeine, spicy foods, and alcoholic beverage intake

- Drink cold water when you start experiencing signs of hot flash

- Wear comfortable clothes

- And when the hot flash starts, splash cold water on your wrists and face.

Sexual problems your intercourse activities will be affected as vaginal dryness is already appearing as another menopause symptom. This is the result of the decreased estrogen level. You can try to apply some stimulants so to reach orgasm. You can also have vaginal lubricants for a less painful intercourse.

Urinary problems estrogen loss has been discovered to play a role in the urinary problems of women undergoing menopause process. Because of the loss, tissues found on the urinary tract also undergo changes, leaving these women to encounter difficulties with their urinary activities. The following are the typical problems that these women may find themselves with:

Urine leaks (may occur even from your small movements such as laughing and coughing)

Vaginal dryness, and vaginal discharge, itching and burning.

 Urine infection

Frequent passing of urine (daytime and nighttime)

You can have a regular exercise to combat the severity of these urinary problems. Also, exercise bladder training can be a simple yet effective treatment to lessen the amount of discomfort that urinary problems are giving you.

Sleep/Insomnia problems these are usually the result of the hot flashes occurrences. You may experience tossing and turning at nights leaving you awake all night and tiredness during the days. Seek medical help from the doctors so they can prescribe proper treatment from this problem.

Depression Menopause Somatic Symptoms

Hot Flashes and Other Common Menopause Symptoms

by Birgit Jurock

Menopause is a natural life process for women. It usually occurs in your early or mid-forties, and, unfortunately, it is accompanied by a number of symptoms that can be quite concerning to most women. Some women experience very few changes
during this time, while others report noticeable symptoms. The more you know about menopause, the better prepared you will be to manage any menopause-related problems that might come your
way.

These symptoms can be an indication of menopause:

Achy joints - hot flashes - temporary and minor decrease in the ability to concentrate or recall - changes in sexual desire - extreme sweating - headaches - frequent urination - early wakening - vaginal dryness - mood changes - insomnia - night
sweats - conditions commonly associated with PMS ....

Also, increased allergies, rapid heart beats, breast soreness, tenderness, sudden weight gain, hair loss, electric shock sensation, in body or head, osteoporosis, fatigues.

One of the first symptoms most women see in menopause is irregular or missed periods. When menopause starts to occur, the estrogen and progesterone levels, stimulated by the ovaries,
are seriously decreased. This means that the ovaries no longer get the signal to release the egg, which means that a woman will often notice a disruption in her normal monthly cycle.

Another common symptom of menopause is a hot flash. More than seventy five percent of women who go through menopause experience hot flashes, in varying degrees of severity. This makes a woman feel flush. For example, she can be standing in a
room that is only seventy degrees, but she will overwhelmingly feel as if someone has turned the temperature up to ninety degrees. In the very next moment, though, she may feel as if the room is only forty degrees, and she is suddenly shivering.

These hot flashes can be accompanied by other symptoms like dizziness, heart palpitations, or faintness. Most hot flashes last up to ten minutes, but not all women experience them to that terrible degree. Some women simply acknowledge
them and move on. Poor diet and stress levels in the woman's body have been shown to have a negative effect on the entire process. Most women will experience this symptom for five to six
years, though some women have them for the ten to twenty years prior and following menopause.

Hot flashes typically lead to another common symptom of menopause, insomnia. Because hot flashes can occur both during the day and through the night, many women will find that they wake up drenched in their own sweat. Often they must get
up to change their clothes and their sheets to escape the level of sweat that the body has produced. If a woman is a light sleeper anyway, and most are after they have children, it can be
impossible for her to fall asleep again.

Interestingly enough, though, night sweats aren't the only thing that cause these sleep disturbances. The hormone levels in the blood also have an effect on the quality of a woman's sleep.

Fixing these hormone levels can sometimes eliminate sleep difficulties.

Learning to identify the common symptoms of menopause can help you learn to deal with them on a much healthier level. Be sure to contact your doctor if any of your symptoms are causing serious problems in your life.
